Identity Theft
Identity Theft
Titled: Identity Theft
This is a hybrid piece that delves into the societal norms and perspectives that dictate how we perceive ourselves and others. It tickles the issue of labelling individuals from birth as either a boy or girl, perpetuating stereotypical gender roles that no longer serve a purpose for humanity. The pink and blue base colours symbolises their entrenched presence in society and how they permeate people's identities, highlighting how individuals are consumed by social expectations. Despite one's personal identification, society constantly attempts to confine them within these labels and boxes.
My artwork aims to provide a platform for people to express their truest selves and resist society's attempts to steal or diminish their identities based on traditional views. It incorporates mixed media, utilising plywood to deconstruct the concept of a 'closet, which ironically alludes to the experience of 'coming out' due to traditional viewpoints such as those influenced by religion. This references the unjust treatment and shaming individuals face when expressing their try identity. The people depicted in the painting assert that their identities will no longer be stolen.
